Tonle Sap - Cambodia's Great Lake

Tonle Sap Lake located South of Siem Reap City is the largest lake in Cambodia and plays an integral part in the ecological balance of the country.

In the dry season it is a shallow lake which drains through the Tonle Sap River into the Mekong River at Phnom Penh. However this changes in the June - November monsoon season when the high water level of the Mekong River causes a reverse flow up the Tonle Sap River into the lake area. The inflow increases the size of the lake from its low of 2500 square kilometres to over 10,000 square kilometres. This makes the lake the largest freshwater lake in the South East Asia during the wet season.

The flooded mangrove forest plains are home to over 100 varieties of water birds including a number of threatened or endangered species. There are over 200 varieties of fish in its waters as well as crocodiles in maroques otters and turtles.

The lake is populated with floating villages inhabited by both Cambodian and Vietnamese communities. The individual villages are an amazing sight with their floating houses, markets, schools and churches. The villagers earn a living from fishing with their huge fish traps catching enough to supply Cambodia with half of its fish consumption.

One of more prominent floating villages is Chong Khneas. It is 12 kilometres south of Siem Reap and is a departure/arrival point for the Phnom Penh ferry service and also Tone Sap lake tourist trips.

While this floating village is a well known landmark, the tuk tuk driver who brought the group from Siem Reap claimed that less tourist orientated villages of Kampong Pluk and Kampong Khleang gave more of an insight into lake life. Both these villages are south of Chong Khneas on the eastern side of the lake. Kampong Khleang is actually the largest floating community on Tonle Sap .This Vietnamese settlement also has a thriving pottery industry as there were stacks of clay pots in front of most of the houses.

To the west of Chong Khneas at the northern end of the lake is the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. This reserve is and has been called the most important breeding ground in South East Asia for large water birds. Species such as the Black-headed ibis, spot billed Pelican, Grey headed Fish Eagle, Painted Stock and Millet Stork nest in the area. The sanctuary is most popular with bird watchers in the dry season months when flocks of migratory birds visit the area.

During the dry season the lake water flow reverses with the inflow into the Mekong River providing a necessary balance to the river south of Tonle Sap. The fresh water flow into the Mekong Delta of Vietnam provides a buffer to the salt headwaters of the South China Sea entering the delta's agricultural lands.

Royal Palace, Phnom Penh, Cambodia - 360° View

Cambodia's Royal Palace complex was begun by King Norodom (1834-1904) in 1886, when the capital was moved to Phnom Penh. Most buildings were completed before World War I, with involvement by French administrators and Thai designers and architects. French influence can be seen in the formal gardens which enhance the palace, and there are some European-style buildings on the grounds. The Throne Hall, which was originally built in wood. The present structure dates from 1919. Imitating the face towers at Angkor, four faces overlook the complex from the main spire high above the roof, whose eaves are braced by flying celestials.

Asia's Most Exotic Landscape, Cambodia!

The exotic look of the country is one of the things that people always want to spend any comment within the Kingdom of Cambodia to travel. The look is mostly derived from their Khmer heritage in Cambodia, where the largest and most powerful culture in Southeast Asia has been for many centuries. A large number of Buddhist temple called "Wat" is the largest and tallest buildings in rural Cambodia. This beautiful glittering temples are watching the landscape, muchsimilar position on the hills, but larger, in most cases, when the majority of rural communities in the West.

The landscape has millions cambodian palm sugar in its vast rice fields that offer flights cambodian single spaced. The sugar plantation trees were introduced by decree created the monarchy, the dominance of the landscape through this particular structure. The Sugar Palm has a distinct rounded crown and is a formidable producer of coconut, a staple food in KhmerDiet.

The other thing you can not miss the smiles and the endless hello friends you get when you return for all children. It 's easy to see that many children live in poverty, but fortunately for them are not aware of this and laugh and play all day. Even as adults, Khmer, some of the happiest people is to do justice to your travels. A sense that their expectations of the world in line with its reality and all is well herenow, so why not be happy? A wonderful thing to see in this exotic Asian country of Cambodia!

Great Romantic Getaways in Southeast Asia

My wife and I had an incredible honeymoon throughout southeast Asia. Here are some great romantic honeymoon getaways- as well as several to avoid- that you and your loved one can enjoy for fifty dollars a day.

Siem Reap, Cambodia. Home to Angkor Wat, the legendary lost cities of the ancient Khmer civilization, this is truly a world class destination that rivals Machu Pichu. The ruins are amazing, and require two to three days to fully explore. In order to save some money, pay for the three day pass ($40) and hire a tuk tuk driver to give you a day tour of the smaller sites on the first day. The going rate for a driver is about $15 per day, but you may be able to haggle them down.

On the second day, rent bicycles and ride to the major attractions of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. They are only about 7km away from the city center of Siem Reap, and it's a beautiful ride among shaded groves and along the river.

Siem Reap is a a town with a distinctly European flavor. Make sure to visit the aptly named Bar St (or Pub St. depending on who you ask) between four and six in the afternoon for fifty cents draft beers. You can find great dinners around this area for around five dollars a person, or hit up the street vendors and eat like a champ for $1.50.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. OK, it's a big city, but this wonderful town has a lot to offer and explore. At nighttime, head down towards the Saigon River, where the streets are lit up with an amazing of array of colours, sights and smells. I recommend starting your day with the national dish, pho. This is a steaming bowl of noodles, herbs and beef (vegetarian is also possible) that the two of you can enjoy for less than a dollar. Ho Chi Minh is a great place to live it up, so treat yourselves to a gourmet Vietnamese dinner in District 1 for less than ten dollars.

Ko Phi Phi, Thailand. Unfortunately, this naturally gorgeous island in Southern Thailand is yet another victim of Thailand's over development. However, if you can handle the crowds, the beaches here will surpass any that even Hawaii has to offer.  The name of budget accommodation is a beach bungalow. The amenities are sparse- a bathroom is considered "upscale"- and the price in proportion to how close you are to the water. In my opinion, the extra five dollars a night is well worth it.

Ko Chang, Thailand. An alternative to Ko Phi Phi, and a good choice if you're headed towards Cambodia. Ko Chang didn't have roads ten years ago, and has undergone an amazing amount of development since then. You can actually watch small shanty bars constructed overnight. If you sit tight here and enjoy the small but gorgeous beach, you can live very comfortably for $30 per day for the two of you. I highly recommend staying at the Paradise Cottages, as their lounge area overlooks the water, and provides great views of the local fisherman at sunset.  Sit in a hammock, sip a pineapple shake for a dollar, and watch your problems melt away...

I hope these suggestions will help you on your next trip. Remember to travel slowly, as this will provide you a lot more value on your honeymoon. Happy travels!

Angkor Wat Temple

The Angkor Wat Temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cambodia. People from around the world travel to this temple to view this temple in Ankor Wat in all of the glory it presents. The temple is truly a look into the wondrous history of this nation's past. The temple was first built in the 12th century as the primary temple for the legendary king Suryavarman II. Many of the temples that have been built during this era have been destroyed thanks to the ravages of time. This is one of the few perfectly preserved temples that still remain in the modern day. The Angkor Wat Temple is not a temple that reflects only one religion. It represents the universal benefits of all religions and its inclusiveness has become a nation symbol. This is why the temple of Ankor Wat appears on the nation's national flag.

The origin of the temple was to honor the Khmer cosmos' caretaker Vishu. The Angkor Wat Temple was first intended as a means of symbolizing the center of the universe. Again, this is somewhat ironic since most travelers will visit from all around the world to see the temple. In a way, this makes it the center of Cambodia's sightseeing universe or sorts. Actually, it is more than just a sightseeing stop as it is also a stunning example of the artistry that has gone into the architecture of its creation. The minute one sees this temple for the first time, the sheer brilliance of its visual imagery becomes overwhelming.

This is most evident in the exterior of the Angkor Wat Temple. The temple is surrounded by a walled structure which itself is surrounded by a moat. This may sound like a medieval castle but the look is far more inviting and invigorating as opposed to ominous. Once you do enter the interior of the temple, you will see a series of ponds, galleries, and chapels. The latter chapels are still intended as homages to Vishu. Again, these structures are all unique in their look and design and still look as stunning today as they were when first built. This is thanks in great part to the tremendous work done to make sure it has been properly maintained.

One of the most unique aspects of the Angkor Wat Temple is the King's throne. Of course, if it was not for King Suryavarman II the entire temple would not exist. While there are many varied examples of items that honor the king to be found in the temple, it is the throne that can be considered one of the most impressive. It truly captures the essence of the leader in a brilliant manner. As such, the continued presence of his legendary throne is quite appropriate. It is also something that is very interesting to examine as well which is another plus to visiting the temple.

There is so much unique to see at the temple of Angkor Wat that it may not even be possible to do so in one visit. This is fine as the temple is open throughout the year and making two trips on your same visit will provide double the rewarding experience. Again, this is one of the most unique tourist attractions in Cambodia and the entire world. As such, visiting the temple is highly advised for any traveler to the land.

Phnom Penh Shopping - Russian And Olympic Markets

There are many places to shop in Phnom Penh, most located within three markets, the Central Market, the Russian Market and the Olympic Market. Perhaps the most increasingly popular is the Russian Market; whilst the Central Market, which opened in 1937 after being designed by a French architect, remains a famous landmark of the city and still offers a large variety of goods, with everything from electronic gadgetry to second hand clothes, bric-a-brac and jewellery up for sale, and is indeed still very much worth a visit, it is the Russian Market that is gradually growing to prominence with many tourists.

Originally a market in the 1980s when the country was under Communist rule, the Russian Market, located between Streets 440 and 450, is increasingly the place to go for those wanting to find the real bargains. Everything from traditional souvenirs such as coins, trinkets, miniature Buddha's and the like, to clothes, local arts and crafts and items such as CDs and DVDs can be found here, often for a very low price. One thing to remember about shopping in the Russian Market is - always haggle! You might be surprised by just how much lower you will be able to buy things for, even if the price already seems remarkably cheap to begin with.

The Olympic Market is the newest of all the markets, opened in 1994 and located near the Olympic Stadium. Unlike the other two markets, the Olympic Market specialises almost completely in wholesale items.

With Phnom Penh hotels located close to most of the markets, all visitors should explore them. Even those staying in a discount Macao hotel might find it worth their while to pop over for a visit.

Viroths restaurant Siem Reap

Viroth's Restaurant boasts a sleek and stylish interior. The French and Khmer were the original owners of popular Angkor Café. Unlike the hotel, which is still a secret among those in the know, the restaurant is well-known and well-loved. The food is traditional Khmer cuisine and is mighty tasty. The amok fish is a perfect blend of coconut milk and lemon grass and, unlike at other restaurants, the fish is completely deboned.
