HowLan presents: allowance 3008 Le Meridien, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap is the small town close to the Angkor temples and palaces. Le Meridien claims to be the nearest hotel to the templesite. It's only a short tuk-tuk-drive away indeed. Friendly staff, but still lots of room for improvement.

"PHNOM PENH DAY 1" Dancejill's photos about Phnom Penh, Cambodia

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Phnom Penh, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Dancejill titled "PHNOM PENH DAY 1" Dancejill's travel blog entry: "We are off about 7 to find new digs. We look at a couple of really nice places for $50. but keep on looking. We are in the area around the Royal Palace and places seem to be quite expensive like the Cambodian that starts over $200 and wasn't on Orbitz.com. We find one of the hotels recommended by the chap last night for $20. The desk man says $45 so we take a look. It does include breakfast and we come down to negotiate. We get it for $35 and he has to include breakfast for this morning. He also will have their tuk-tuk take us back to Okay Guesthouse to get our bags. The breakfast is a buffet, lots of Cambodian food same as in Vietnam and China, rise, noodles, soup and hot veggies all green in colour. There is also some little sausages, French toast and Cambodian waffles, fruit, omletts or eggs of your choice. They also have a little very old toaster over to make toast in. It was very good. We are moved in and off to tour the Royal Palace, but it is closed as it is just after 10:30. We meet a tuk-tuk and hire him to take us to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. We knew this would be a very sad place to go to and see. It truly was. There is a presentation about the prison, what happened here, and also the account from a Scandinavian journalist who was invited to the country during the war and his feelings and views ...

"Week Twenty One - Phnom Penh to Siem Reap" Petenic360's photos about Siem Reap, Cambodia

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Siem Reap, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Petenic360 titled "Week Twenty One - Phnom Penh to Siem Reap" Petenic360's travel blog entry: "Warning We have done rather a lot this week so I would recommend that you treat this week's entry like The News of the World and just look at the pictures. Day 142 - Tuesday 13 January Chuffed, relaxed, well slept, hot showered and right handed are just some of the things that we are not this morning. Except showered and hot. On all fours, moving backwards, pushing our backpacks with our legs we make our way to Reception like two giant dung beetles. We try to check out but the manager shows us to a newer, bigger, nicer room in the new wing. It isnt so we check out. As we come out of the gates we are resigned to swinging right and booking into the $95 per night Ayanara Hotel. However a moto driver offers to take us, for free, to a nearby hotel which is $40 per night and very nice. His name is Nick and I climb aboard his wee Honda while Nicola climbs aboard his mate's Tony. The hotel is called Regent Park Hotel and it is indeed very nice and $40 per night. We book in. The room has its own safe, but unlike others we have used which are either key operated or code entry, this one has a key and a dial like the old safe cracker films. It takes twenty minutes of following the instructions before we get it to work. All the while I am on my honkers which isnt good with my knees. Vanessa Phelps ...

"Dear Cambodia" Superg's photos about Phnom Penh, Cambodia

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Phnom Penh, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Superg titled "Dear Cambodia" Superg's travel blog entry: "Dear Cambodia, Thanks for having me. I would have loved to have stayed longer but I lingered too long with your neighbours'. Only 13 days remained on my visa. Turns out customs gave me 30 days from date of entry anyway, but I had already made plans to meet some people in Bangkok. Your country is amazing with a history that is both colourful and dark. May Pol Pot rot wherever he is. Your people are amazing, especially considering their past. I think they are among some of the friendliest people I've encountered in South East Asia. Most of those who deal with tourists speak very good English and this allows us to really get to know some of them. The moto drivers are a lot of fun to talk to, especially in Siem Reap, and that's something I never thought I'd hear myself say. Tuel Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields were pretty sobering and it's hard to believe this happened so recently. When I was 18 my biggest worry was getting dates and loosing my driver's license. Phnom Penh is a pretty great city with some sights that rival those in any other SEA city. I was also impressed with its cosmopolitan selection of restaurants. The backpacker's ghetto in the lake district could use a little work. The drug dealers are overly pesky. The same guy asked me if wanted to score some weed about eight times inside of a half hour. He quit ...

"Angkor What?" Jennyandpaul2's photos about Siem Reap, Cambodia

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Siem Reap, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Jennyandpaul2 titled "Angkor What?" Jennyandpaul2's travel blog entry: "We LOVED Cambodia. It was one of the real surprises on our trip. We were expecting a country that would be a lot of work (and it was at times), that required us to pay bribes (and we had to once), that required us to fight off rickshaw drivers and salespeople (not bad at all), and even that we'd need to look for landmines (they're out there, but we didn't go to the areas where they're still a concern). For the most part though, it was friendly, relaxed, hot (a little too hot -- over 100 degrees one day, not adding in the humidity), historical, and fun. It was a real treat. Getting to Siem Reap (the city closest to Angkor Wat) was a little bit of a chore. When we got to the Thai-Cambodian border, we had to wade through people on the Thailand side trying to sell us Cambodian visas for 2-3 times what they really cost (we ignored them). We made it through Thai customs without difficulty and then wandered through no-man's land looking for the Cambodian visa office (we took a wrong turn and visited a Cambodian casino-hotel first, but eventually found our way). We were told that in addition to paying $20 each for our visas (you pay for everything in US dollars in Cambodia -- they give you change in dollars and Cambodian riel), we would need to pay an extra 100 Thai Baht (about $3.00) as an "expediting fee" (read ...
