It was one of the real surprises on our trip. We were expecting a country that would be a lot of work (and it was at times), that required us to pay bribes (and we had to once), that required us to fight off rickshaw drivers and salespeople (not bad at all), and even that we'd need to look for landmines (they're out there, but we didn't go to the areas where they're still a concern). For the most part though, it was friendly, relaxed, hot (a little too hot -- over 100 degrees one day, not adding in the humidity), historical, and fun. It was a real treat. Getting to Siem Reap (the city closest to Angkor Wat) was a little bit of a chore. When we got to the Thai-Cambodian border, we had to wade through people on the Thailand side trying to sell us Cambodian visas for 2-3 times what they really cost (we ignored them). We made it through Thai customs without difficulty and then wandered through no-man's land looking for the Cambodian visa office (we took a wrong turn and visited a Cambodian casino-hotel first, but eventually found our way). We were told that in addition to paying $20 each for our visas (you pay for everything in US dollars in Cambodia -- they give you change in dollars and Cambodian riel), we would need to pay an extra 100 Thai Baht (about $3.00) as an "expediting fee" (read ...
