It was one of the real surprises on our trip. We were expecting a country that would be a lot of work (and it was at times), that required us to pay bribes (and we had to once), that required us to fight off rickshaw drivers and salespeople (not bad at all), and even that we'd need to look for landmines (they're out there, but we didn't go to the areas where they're still a concern). For the most part though, it was friendly, relaxed, hot (a little too hot -- over 100 degrees one day, not adding in the humidity), historical, and fun. It was a real treat. Getting to Siem Reap (the city closest to Angkor Wat) was a little bit of a chore. When we got to the Thai-Cambodian border, we had to wade through people on the Thailand side trying to sell us Cambodian visas for 2-3 times what they really cost (we ignored them). We made it through Thai customs without difficulty and then wandered through no-man's land looking for the Cambodian visa office (we took a wrong turn and visited a Cambodian casino-hotel first, but eventually found our way). We were told that in addition to paying $20 each for our visas (you pay for everything in US dollars in Cambodia -- they give you change in dollars and Cambodian riel), we would need to pay an extra 100 Thai Baht (about $3.00) as an "expediting fee" (read ...

A quick 6am breakfast then out to meet the ever reliable Mr. Wah. He took us the sort journey to the River front for which Deb paid him the princely sum of $10. The trip should only cost $1 but Deb wanted to thank him for being so reliable (I thought $5 was ample reliability reward!) After the slightly better than pedestrian pace of the trusty Tuk-Tuk we wondered what we'd be in for with our chug along the river. We were pleasantly surprised as the vessel, although not new, was sleek and fast moving. As we settled in for our approx. 5hr journey to Siem Reap we were initially kept amused by watching the other passengers, especially a lady I named Mrs. Howell. She was the mother of quite a large brood and, judging by the language and accent, from one of the Scandinavian countries. She spent the first hour of the trip unpacking life jacket after life jacket finding the best ones for her brood and applying them to the children with such vigor I thought they were sure to turn blue at any minute. Obviously the daring seafaring nature of the Vikings has not been passed down through the generations! I'm not sure of the name of our boat, but I guess the English translation must've been something like "SS ...

Bakong is the first official state visit of temples built in Angkor. It was in 881 by King Indravarman I have completed about 75 years after the founding of the Khmer Empire. Bakong is in an area about 15 miles southeast of Siem Reap, which today is Roluos original products. "At the time of its creation was the temple of the Khmer Bakong Hariharalaya the capital and served as the official stamp of the state. A few years after the founding of the king, however, I moved Yasovarmanthe capital of the area north of Siem Reap, which is now called Angkor Thom, where he founded a new capital called Yasodharapura. Bakong built a temple pyramid of gray stone and originally dedicated to Shiva. Eight towers reddish brick temple were built around the pyramid. The tower at the top of the pyramid was much later, probably in the 12 th century ago. His style is 12 century temple of Angkor Wat. Bakong is the largest of a group of three temples, which nowIncluding the aforementioned "Roluos Group: Preah Ko and the others are Lolei, both towers of the temple of red brick similar to the function Bakong, but do not have the pyramid. All three temples are in the second half of the 9th century, and all three originally belonged to the Khmer capital Hariharalaya. The Angkor Wat Temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cambodia. People from around the world travel to this temple to view this temple in Ankor Wat in all of the glory it presents. The temple is truly a look into the wondrous history of this nation's past. The temple was first built in the 12th century as the primary temple for the legendary king Suryavarman II. Many of the temples that have been built during this era have been destroyed thanks to the ravages of time. This is one of the few perfectly preserved temples that still remain in the modern day. The Angkor Wat Temple is not a temple that reflects only one religion. It represents the universal benefits of all religions and its inclusiveness has become a nation symbol. This is why the temple of Ankor Wat appears on the nation's national flag.

The origin of the temple was to honor the Khmer cosmos' caretaker Vishu. The Angkor Wat Temple was first intended as a means of symbolizing the center of the universe. Again, this is somewhat ironic since most travelers will visit from all around the world to see the temple. In a way, this makes it the center of Cambodia's sightseeing universe or sorts. Actually, it is more than just a sightseeing stop as it is also a stunning example of the artistry that has gone into the architecture of its creation. The minute one sees this temple for the first time, the sheer brilliance of its visual imagery becomes overwhelming.

This is most evident in the exterior of the Angkor Wat Temple. The temple is surrounded by a walled structure which itself is surrounded by a moat. This may sound like a medieval castle but the look is far more inviting and invigorating as opposed to ominous. Once you do enter the interior of the temple, you will see a series of ponds, galleries, and chapels. The latter chapels are still intended as homages to Vishu. Again, these structures are all unique in their look and design and still look as stunning today as they were when first built. This is thanks in great part to the tremendous work done to make sure it has been properly maintained.

One of the most unique aspects of the Angkor Wat Temple is the King's throne. Of course, if it was not for King Suryavarman II the entire temple would not exist. While there are many varied examples of items that honor the king to be found in the temple, it is the throne that can be considered one of the most impressive. It truly captures the essence of the leader in a brilliant manner. As such, the continued presence of his legendary throne is quite appropriate. It is also something that is very interesting to examine as well which is another plus to visiting the temple.

There is so much unique to see at the temple of Angkor Wat that it may not even be possible to do so in one visit. This is fine as the temple is open throughout the year and making two trips on your same visit will provide double the rewarding experience. Again, this is one of the most unique tourist attractions in Cambodia and the entire world. As such, visiting the temple is highly advised for any traveler to the land.
